Afro-Latin House is a borderless dance sound rooted in the African diaspora, where house music meets Afro and Latin rhythmic traditions.
Emerging through cultural exchange across Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe, the genre is defined by polyrhythmic percussion, hypnotic grooves, and a deep connection to movement, ritual, and heritage. Rather than belonging to a single place, Afro-Latin House exists in motion, shaped by migration, collaboration, and shared ancestry.
This spirit of exchange lives at the heart of “Simancongo,” the new release from French-Colombian producer and DJ Zapapaya, created in collaboration with legendary Afro-Colombian group Son Palenque and Paris-based duo KSPR and Montaigne. Splitting his time between Paris and Cartagena, Zapapaya continues to push the boundaries of Latin house through sun-soaked Afro-Caribbean rhythms and culturally rooted storytelling.
“Simancongo” centers the voice and language of Son Palenque’s Justo Valdés, whose vocals were recorded in Colombia before Zapapaya returned to France with a raw demo built only from voice and percussion. In the Paris studio, the track came together organically: KSPR connected deeply with the Palenquero lyrics, improvising high-register guitar melodies that echo Champeta and Soukous traditions from Colombia’s Caribbean coast, reimagined within a modern electronic framework. “The song came together in just a couple of hours - a natural, culturally sensitive fusion where each artist brought their own background,” says Zapapaya.
Valdés’ lyrics draw directly from Palenquero culture, using playful double meanings involving three animals - the owl, the hen, and the chick - to explore flirtation and desire. At its core, the repeated phrase “Mi na Simancongo” carries profound historical weight. The term “Simancongo” affirms Congo and Bantu ancestry, connecting the track to the maroon communities of San Basilio de Palenque and their legacy of resistance, survival, and the preservation of Palenquero, the only surviving Spanish-based Creole language in the Americas. The title becomes a declaration of identity, memory, and belonging.
Spanning continents and centuries, “Simancongo” is a living example of Afro-Latin House as a cultural bridge: music that honors ancestral roots while moving the dance floor forward.
